Around 15 years ago I found the first Sparklehorse album in a used CD store discount bin for $2. The name was familiar, I remember reading the band opened for Radiohead during OK Computer tour in the mid-90′s. That album opened up a new world of sound production for me and all my friends who cared for that sort of thing.
Eventually we were able to see them live and the set brought the same sort of feeling. He first walked out from the side of the stage after the guitar techs were in a failing battle with his rig. Tall, hunched over a semi-hollow guitar strapped to his thin frame, he twiddled is gear and was able to get it to work in no time. He used two microphones, one for strictly for a distorted effect. It was all so sublime. It was a wonderful compliment to the album my friends and I grew to adore. We left buzzing.
Mark took his life four years ago. While we’ll never know what caused such a talented soul to make that move, we know that his music will live on and his talents will continue to be discovered by new fresh ears everyday.
Come join us as we celebrate the music of Sparklehorse.
